The first World Fencing Championship among the journalists was held on the 6th of October

On the 6^th of October after conference the representatives of mass-media accredited to the Championship   took part in unusual Fencing World Championship for journalists.

Before the beginning of this tournament vice-president of Russian Fencing Federation Valeriy Dikevich announced the welcome speech of Alisher Usmanov, President of Russian Fencing Federation and President of European Fencing Confederation. Mr. Usmanov thanked journalists for a huge work on purpose of   this sport’s popularization. He blessed them for the bright, exciting and objective publications about the Championship that appear in world press. He also wished that participants will enjoy the fist World Fencing Championship on “peeping epees” and will get an unforgettable impression. “I wish you to “peep” with pleasure. Let the strongest win!” – finished Usmanov.

29 journalists decided to try their strength in this unusual Championship. The bouts were held according to the Olympic system when the bout is finished after 3 touches made by one fencer. Two representatives of Russia got into the final group of four journalists: Denis Bikov and Elena Grishina; there was also the official photographer of FIE Serge Timasheff from USA and the Italian TV commentator Stefano Pantano. In the final bout Bikov was defeated by Pantano, who became the first Champion of the journalistic Championship on “peeping” sabers. Actually it is his forth Champion’s title. In 1989, 1990 and 1993 years, being a member of the Italian team, he won the title of World Champion in real fencing competitions.

There was a winner of the tournament, but there were no losers. Most part of journalists had never ever before held in their arms a weapon even a toy one.
