The Championship stayed in Saint-Petersburg for three more seconds

French epee-fencers and foil-fencers from Poland gained the last gold medals of the Championship.

Epee-fencers from Italy and France were first to compete for “the gold” of the team competitions – almost all the bout the rivals were following each over “touche by touche”. And only at the very end French athletes succeeded in getting a decisive advantage – 45:38. This gold medal became the fourth for the French team on this Championship. Italians will take home the most number of rewards – nine medals. But they have only one “gold”.

The last bout was between foil-fencers from Russia and Poland. Russians failed in the beginning – Evgenia Lamonova got three touches one after another from Magda Mroczkiewicz, still she could win back two of it. Soon the Russian foil-fencers started to lead, but Polish athletes didn’t fall behind.

A dramatic outcome of the duel came in the last bout. Evgenia Lamonova and Sylwia Gruchala started their bout when the score was 21:20 in favour of Russian team. At first the Polish foil-fencer was leading as she made four consecutive touches. Nevertheless Lamonova was great at the end of the bout. She equalized the score – 25:25.

The Championship evidently didn’t want to leave Saint-Petersburg – he could stay one minute longer in the city. But the Polish foil-fencer “permitted” to continue the competitions only for three seconds. This was the time she needed to deliver the last triumphant touch – 26:25.
