FIE greeting

Rene This is for our Federation a great honour and immense pleasure to be in the city of Saint-Petersburg.

Russia is a big fencing nation and Saint-Petersburg, a city which contributes to the development of our sport thanks notably to the prestigious Grand Prix competition at Foil held every year in this city.

I am convinced that these World Championships will be a great success and that Saint-Petersburg will leave to all participants unforgettable memories.

Kindly allow me, on behalf of the International Fencing Federation, and in my name, to thank the Organizing Committee for its collaboration and its entire work.

The sports stake is considerable this year as these World Championships are qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the participation should be exceptional both by the number of fencers and their quality.

This year again, these World Championships are held under the sign of modernity. The video-refereeing was a great success in Turin and, naturally, it will be used again. We owe this success to our partner Tissot, who accompanied us throughout this season, and who I wish to thank here.

The wireless will be set up for the competitions at foil and sabre.

Besides, we shall give, this year once again, a particular care to the mediatisation of our sport, thanks to the broadcast of the competitions on television and Internet.

I thank the Organising Committee chaired by Ms Anna Kovaleva and Mr Rydnik, who will know how to give to these World Championships a quality close to the perfection.

Many thanks to all the officials and the athletes who will bring their contribution, and many thanks to the sponsors for their support without which these Championships could not be organized.

I am convinced that these competitions will take place with the chivalrous spirit which suits to our sport, and I wish to all the fencers to obtain the results they deserve.

Good luck to all !

Ren'e Roch

President of the International Fencing federation
